“Imagine there’s no countries, It isn’t hard to do, Nothing to kill or die for, And no religion too, Imagine all the people living life in peace” John Winston Lennon
In college, they graded things on a curve. However, there was a low mark below which none could pass. In society, there is also a minimum indicating that we as a world have failed.
The need for organized violence to enforce something is a sign of utter failure in a society. In the United States, we send armies to subjugate people and secure their resources. Domestically our laws are brutally forced by an armed occupying presence called the police. And finally, the mere fact that we have to write down the law and subsequent violations for infractions is a clear sign of failure.
I hope that the first point is obvious. That the military-industrial complex screams failure. We spend massive amounts of money as others are hungry, homeless and without health insurance. Our soldiers are manipulated into killing and destroying only to return to a society that does not meet their needs. If it did vets wouldn’t be killing themselves at a rate of over twenty a day. Finally and most sad are the unfortunate victims of war. The ordinary people who are blown to bits by indiscriminating bombs. The fact that even the mere thought of war doesn’t outrage the population is a sign of our collective insanity and denial.
We live in a police state. In my town where I live, we have local police, country police, state police, and university police. Then there are all the national police like the FBI, ATF, homeland security, CIA, and so on. The fact that we need all this firepower to enforce the law is a sign of failure. The United States has over two million people incarcerated. Doesn’t that just scream out and tell you that things aren’t working? Again if one fails to be outraged at this societal failure there is something wrong with you.
Finally, the mere fact that we need to articulate our laws in writing is a clear and present sign of failure. The United States Constitution is supposed to be the highest law in the land. Yet we do not even adhere to it. Of course, the constitution was plagiarized from the Iroquois Nation. Here is the thing if you need to write down the laws you have failed.
Society in the United States is for many a group of organized strangers united by nationalism and a red, white and blue flag. Social interaction for many is superficial. Some people don’t even say hello to their neighbor let alone know them. Sadly as a nation, we are not a people, but rather a corporate entity. Man is reduced to a dollar figure. While the capitalistic system might make an efficient workforce to produce goods and enrich those on the top of the power chain it is a miserable way to live life. The common person is an economic slave because once the money runs out so does your rights to food, housing, and other necessities.
In the Bible, at one time the nation of Israel was under the law. The law, among other things, defined right and wrong. Yet when Christ came he told us that we should adhere to the Spirit of the law and not merely the letter. Recall the Pharisees of the time of Jesus who would tithe the mint and cummin but neglected law, judgment, mercy, and faith. So here is the thing if you need to write down the laws, and split hairs in court as to whether these laws were broken or not, you have failed as a society.
A little leaven leaveneth the whole loaf. What that means is that it only takes a little evil to ruin a good thing. Unfortunately, we have a lot of evil in the United States. Evil saturates the system from the cop on the beat to the president of the United States. It is obvious that giving the government more firepower isn’t the solution. Furthermore, the United States government flagrantly violates the constitution in many ways. For example, they have a ‘standing army’ something clearly forbidden.
The truth is the United States government only follows the laws when it is convenient for them to do so. They illegally rounded up the Japanese during World War 2 and have been utterly horrendous and dishonorable in their dealing with the treaties of the Native Americans. I could probably go through history and easily cite hundreds of infractions by the United States against the highest law of the land.
There will never be a political solution to the problems of our world. It is naive and absurd to think so because merely be writing down the rules you have proven your doubt that people will adhere to them. However in a society with close cultural bonds, a better world can be found. It is easy and expedient to drop bombs a world away because the people with power have no attachment or concern for those people. However, if we understand that we share humanity things would be different. That an attack on one is an attack on all.
All people and cultures have something to offer. Instead of sharing our collective wisdom we are destroying and exploiting others. We live in a failed society but that does not mean we shouldn’t make every effort to make things better. In fact, the opposite is true, we need to do all we can to ‘love our neighbor’.
